DICTATORSHIP FOR EXPORT: BRAZILIAN DIPLOMACY AND THE OVERTHROW OF SALVADOR ALLENDE

This article aims to shed light on the Brazilian diplomatic influence on the Chilean coup
d’état of 1973, an area historians have neglected. It focuses on the following questions: to what
extent did the right-wing military regime installed in Brazil influence the overthrow of Salvador
Allende? What was the relation between the two countries during the years previous to the Chilean
coup d’état? In which ways did Brazil and the United States act as partners in this event? By way of
an in-depth archival exploration of one historical example using newly declassified documents, this
work aims to open up new possibilities for a wide range of studies on the relations between military
governments in South America.
